My 2012 Jetta Sportwagen TDI has a rust spot...

A few years ago before this car was mine, my dad missed the jacking point (I think it was like 15 degrees and snowing at the time) and damaged the rocker panel.

I want to fix this rust before it becomes a bigger problem. The car doesn’t even have 40,000 miles, but it still has scratches and a couple door dings so I don’t care if the repair isn’t pretty as long as it stops the rust.

How do I fix it? Rust reformer and then touch up paint? Or do I take it to a body s hop?

Apply some good rust converter. Seal with good paint, apply undercoating, paint with body color.

My wife’s Fit got a rock chip on it 3 years ago, spent to bare metal. I just covered it with rust converter and it’s still holding up.

If I had a choice I’d drive a MK4 R32 or a MK1 Twingo ...but when you’re 17 and your parents give you a car you just shut up and appreciate it.

Not too bad, sand those spots down to clean metal, spray with rust inhibitor, fill, and paint. M ight be tough to matc h the rockguard texture right there but if you don’t care I won’t..

Would you go with a spray can or a brush on solution?

I wouldn’t mess with spray on. I think I used Gemplers

I wasn’t entirely serious, and you have the right take on that.

Rubbing it with a lime or lemon will remove the rust. Slice in half and scrub. Wip e clean with isopropyl alcohol and use a touch up primer/paint

Thats what I was thinking- it's rock guard. Even if slightly off who cares? The rock guard texture is already different from the paint as is.

Have you tried claiming on the VW rust warranty? They actually honor it, I’ve had 3/4 corners and a tailgate fixed.

I appreciate that this may not be covered if it was caused by Jack damage but is the stone guard peeling behind it part of the same incident ? Mine’s doing that now and the rockers are getting ugly. Only snag is all my local dealers are backed up for warranty rust repairs until Jan/Feb so I’m going to try coating the whole underside in cosmoline (rust veto 342 these days) before winter hits.

I can’t be sure for 2012 but back in 2008/09 the warranty was 12years unlimited miles.

Everything in this picture is accidental damage. I had no idea about how long the corrosion warranty was though. I’ll definitely look into that more if I find any more rust

Rubberized/paintable undercoating works wonders as “rock guard”.
